In hospital settings, many well meaning pharmacy and
therapeutics committees or the dispensing pharmacist citing
regulations of such committees will throw up roadblocks to
off-label uses of drugs. Off label uses are not only accepted
by the FDA but are actually encouraged. However, the P&T
committees have a role in the hospitals to assure the
physicians using such are not the first to do so, and in fact
stifle innovation. But their role is partially to protect the
hospital from litigation from experimental uses of drugs.
