EMRs come in all sizes, some include schedulers and practice management software
and some include integrated or optional billing programs. For a tutorial on EMR and
how to make a selection, click here.
Internet Based Programs (Do not require server to store data)
Free web based EMR with scheduling program
$89 per month. Stores your data on
their server and on your computer. Has
scheduling program
$250 per month or if you use the billing service, cost of
the EMR is free. Has scheduling program.
Doctors Partner: $350 per month per provider.
Includes scheduling and practice management
One of the most popular EMRs around...cost for 2 MDs for 2 years is around $16K for
the subscription EMR. They also offer a purchase EMR but requires 2 expensive
servers. Rated #1 by FP. The system is complete and permits multiple means of input,
good patient tracking program, excellent coding, easy output for billing
EMR Purchase (requires hardware and usually server)
Prices Listed are for the Software Purchase Only
Charge is $0.75 per patient per encounter for a fully functional EMR that is loaded with
features. Template based eliminates typing. EMR is loaded onto your server. Purchase
is via buying "credits" in advance. Functions independent of internet. Has scriptwriter.
Very inexpensive starting at around $1000, largely typing based or Dragon based. Templating is poor due
to the absence of drop downs that require long lists of templates, therefore only procedure templates,
skeleton H&P, and FU templates are practical. Very easy to use. Does not output to schedule II scripting.
Excellent integrated scheduler. Constant updates and is improving rapidly. Free 3 month trial.
The inexpensive ableTfactory brand "One Note" EMR is modular with optional
script writer, handwriting recognition, etc. Base price is low with a somewhat
higher price for the entire office. No scheduling program. Simple system that is a
bit cumbersome to use, but worth checking out. 2 year cost 2 docs $1700
"The Chart!" EMR. This is a delightful EMR packed with advanced features and is quite affordable at
$2500 purchase plus $300 per year for updates. These prices are for the entire office. It features MySQL
database (powerful datastorage system), scriptwriting, scheduler, integrates with billing software, SOAP
note format for followups, xray viewer, scanning capacity, and uses type or dragon input. It has template
capabilities, but there are no templates that come with the system.
Modular inexpensive extensively used throughout the US. Major disadvantage: lack of
an integrated scheduler. A large number of modules are available including OCR
scanning, prescriptions, etc. Base system starts at $300. Templates are available in
the program or on line in users forums. Mainly FP uses this program. On-line demo.
Probably the best value on the entire EMR market: scheduling, EMR, billing program all for $1000
per person using the program in the office. Disadvantage is the patient record looks like a business
spread sheet. It is not tablet friendly, requires much typing or dragon, is not templated, and is
cumbersome to navigate. Excellent program for a one physician/one secretary office.
A smart EMR that learns as you input data. The EMR will bring up past snippets from
your prior patients and use these as templates, but constantly evolves. For 2 MDs and
an office, the cost is around $12,500 for 2 years with no recurring fees. It does not have
practice management features and therefore requires other programs for this.
Way too much typing required to simply open a chart and the EMR appears to be more of a
document manager rather than a traditional medical record. The on line demo focuses on
document printing and scanning, making only a minor mention of the actual medical record
H&P/FU entry. Costs $15-18K for 2 years for 2 physicians.
One of the most popular EMRs around...cost for 2 MDs for 2 years is around $15K for the
EMR purchase (less than the subscription EMR price). They also offer a purchase EMR but
requires 2 expensive servers. Rated #1 by FP. The system is complete and permits multiple
means of input, good patient tracking program, excellent coding, easy output for billing
One of the few EMRs that cater to pain management with specific templates and codes for
pain management. No scheduler or billing program that must be purchased separately...
Template driven system . Total cost EMR plus scheduler plus software to integrate is about
$15,000 per physician
Competitor to eMDs, eCW provides effectively all the same features, is
constantly upgrading. An advantage is that it requires only one server instead of
the 2 for eMDs. Great patient screens and office flow. Price is far more than
eMDs. For 2 MD office, price is $25K over 2 years
The EMR market is laden with software providers that have come and gone, dropping support and
necessary updates as computers advance. GE is a rock solid company with a great EMR, template or
dictation or type driven, that will be around for a very long time. There is a good on line demo and the
program is complete. It prices out for 2 docs for 2 years at $28,200.
Whereas subscription to this web only based program is an inexpensive venue into EMR, purchase is very
expensive. The cost for 2 physicians for 2 years under their purchase plan is $28,800. The program relies
completely on internet access, and the company recommends 2 internet lines in case one goes down.
This is actually a bit scary to have your data residing on their server and you cannot access the data during
internet interruptions.
Integrated billing, scheduling, EMR system costing $33K+ for 2 physicians for 2
years. The system is well designed and easy to use but a bit pricey, although it
does include the billing module unlike many other EMR.
