~Useful Organizations Representing the
Interests of Pain Management/Pain Medicine~
The premier organization for
teaching and standardization
of techniques in
interventional pain medicine
AAPM has been instrumental in development of
pain policy through its bridges with other
non-interventional pain organizations.
ASIPP seeks to define standards, policy, political influence, "board
certification", teaching, and science in one organization or its
affiliates. It serves as the primary political arm of pain medicine
and through its efforts has achieved significant recognition of pain
medicine as a specialty/subspecialty
SPPM is an independent teaching organization for teaching practical sides
of pain medicine including the business aspect. It teaches both MDs and
CRNAs that makes it somewhat controversial. It holds 2 cadaver courses
each year, has no journal, no political aspirations.
NAMS and INS are both excellent
specialty organizations catering to
neuromodulation techniques. Theirs
is an excellent journal
(Neuromodulation) and they have a
great annual meeting
IASP and their American chapter APS are largely
organizations that cater to psychology, PT, and basic
science researchers. Although there are a large
number of physician members, the journals and their
annual meeting are populated with papers from the
above three areas. Their scientific abstracts rock!!!
World Institute of Pain or WIP is an organization that holds the FIPP
examinations for certification in pain as well as an annual meeting in Texas
and Budapest. It's board of directors elected to merge their exam into a
large mega exam run by ASIPP for their certification process. WIP has a
journal that has interesting articles in pain medicine
Holds a rapid paced European style
conference each year with advances in all
types of intradiscal therapies
Membership in this pain physiatry organization is strictly
limited to physiatrists, but non-physiatry physicians may
attend their semi-annual cadaver course meetings.
Excellent organization!
Nearly exclusively surgeon dominated organization that
happens to have one of the best journals in all the pain
literature. Their annual meetings are aimed clearly
towards surgeons, but the organization is worthwhile
for pain physicians.
Society with a newsletter and eclectic annual
meeting covering spine surgery, acupuncture,
interventional, and chiropractic advances
American Society of
Addiction Medicine
represents a valuable
resource in the
continuing study of why
good patients go bad.
They offer several
certifications.
The American Society of Pain
Educators is an organization
dedicated to their namesake and
is developing a certifying exam
A quirky but well meaning organization that
has unfortunately bought into a "Pain Patient
Bill of Rights" that guarantees their access to
narcotics to the point their pain is
"adequately treated". This organization has
its own hymn on their website.
An unorthodox collection of naturopathic physicians, psychologists, new age
medicine practitioners with a few physicians thrown in makes for a quite unusual
annual meeting and journal. They also offer an "accreditation in pain
management" to nearly anyone who takes their 2 hour pain exam.
Outside of the ABMS system, this organization represents the most
respected board certification examination. It is a rather grueling all day
exam and the board has several requirements that must be met by
physicians.
Although membership is not available to most pain
physicians, they do hold meetings that are compelling
and thought provoking. ISMISS holds an excellent
annual meeting that unfortunately is in Zurich in the
dead of January, but they delve into minimally invasive
spine procedures with an international flavor.
